Background
From 1960 up until 2010, the number of Intruder/School Shootings nationwide were relatively consistent, averaging about 3 incidents/year. However, by 2013 that number dramatically increased tenfold to 31 events. This year, January alone had an unprecedented 11 incidents. Unfortunately, our schools and our children continue to be exposed to an ever increasing epidemic of random violence. The problem is increasing exponentially.
It’s important to note that more than 50% of all incidents are over in less than 15 minutes. In fact, 25% are over in less than 6 minutes.
This highlights just how time critical these events really are. It also highlights the unfortunate reality that many of these events may be over before the police have a chance to respond. Schools must be prepared to employ an effective first line of defense.
